2 Chronicles 35:26

Now the rest of the acts of Iosiah, and his goodnes, according to that which was written in the Law of the Lord, 2 Chronicles 35:26 (KJV)

This verse is found within the context of the account of Josiah, one of the righteous kings of Judah. He sought to restore proper worship and obedience to God during a period of spiritual decline in Israel.

Historical Background: Josiah was a king who reigned in Judah for 31 years, from 640 to 609 BC. He ascended the throne at the age of eight and implemented significant religious reforms, including purging the land of idolatry, repairing the temple, and rediscovering the Book of the Law (likely the book of Deuteronomy). Josiah’s reign was marked by his deep commitment to God and his desire to bring the people back to the Lord.

Jeremiah’s Lamentation: In 2 Chronicles 35:26, we read that Jeremiah, the prophet, lamented for Josiah. The term “lamentation” refers to a sorrowful expression of grief or mourning. Jeremiah was known as the weeping prophet because he mourned over the spiritual state of the people and the impending judgment that would come upon Judah due to their disobedience. Jeremiah’s lamentation for Josiah signifies the deep sorrow and mourning that occurred upon Josiah’s untimely death in battle. Josiah was killed in the Battle of Megiddo while attempting to prevent Pharaoh Necho II from advancing towards the Assyrian Empire. His death was a great loss for the nation, as he was one of the righteous kings who sought to lead Judah back to God.

Impact on Singing Men and Women: The verse also mentions that the singing men and women spoke of Josiah in their lamentations and established an ordinance in Israel. This suggests that Josiah’s death had a profound impact on the musicians and singers of that time. They composed songs and poems in honor of Josiah, expressing their grief and celebrating his righteous reign. By making an ordinance in Israel, these lamentations and songs were likely incorporated into the national tradition and commemorated on certain occasions or during specific times of remembrance. The mention of “lamentations” being written suggests that they were recorded and preserved for future generations.

Connection to the Book of Lamentations: The verse concludes by stating that the lamentations were written in “the lamentations,” a term that likely refers to a collection of lament songs rather than the canonical Book of Lamentations. While Jewish tradition attributes the Book of Lamentations to Jeremiah, most scholars consider its authorship uncertain, and the lamentations concerning Josiah are not part of that book, which focuses on Jerusalem’s destruction after 586 BC.

In summary, 2 Chronicles 35:26 highlights the deep sorrow and mourning that accompanied the death of Josiah, one of the righteous kings of Judah. It emphasizes the impact his life and reign had on the people, leading to lamentations and songs being composed in his honor. This verse serves as a reminder of the significant influence a godly leader can have on a nation and the lasting impact they leave behind.
