2 Chronicles 36:14

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

“Moreover all the chief of the priests, and the people, transgressed very much after all the abominations of the heathen; and polluted the house of the LORD which he had hallowed in Jerusalem.”

Historical Context: The book of 2 Chronicles focuses on the history of the kings of Judah, the southern kingdom of Israel, and their relationship with God. This verse is found towards the end of the book, describing the period leading up to the Babylonian captivity.

Spiritual Decline: The verse highlights the spiritual decline and disobedience of both the religious leaders and the people of Judah. It mentions that the priests and the people transgressed greatly, following the abominations and idolatrous practices of the surrounding nations.

Violation of God’s Holiness: The people’s actions resulted in the pollution of the house of the Lord, the temple in Jerusalem. The temple was a sacred place dedicated to God’s worship, and its defilement was a severe offense against God’s holiness.

Consequences of Disobedience: The people’s disobedience had serious consequences for the nation of Judah. It foreshadowed the impending judgment of God and the Babylonian exile, where Jerusalem and the temple would be destroyed, and the people would be taken captive.

  • Seeking Repentance: While this verse highlights the spiritual decline of Judah, it is important to note that the Bible also provides examples of repentance and restoration. The following verses in the chapter describe God’s mercy and His desire to bring His people back to Him.
