2 Chronicles 36:2

“Jehoahaz was twenty and three years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem.”

Historical Setting

Jehoahaz became king after the death of his father Josiah. The people of the land chose him and placed him on the throne in Jerusalem. His accession occurred during Judah’s final troubled years, when foreign empires increasingly controlled the nation’s political future.

A Brief Reign

The verse stresses both Jehoahaz’s age and the extreme brevity of his rule. At twenty-three years old he reigned for only three months. The following verses explain that Pharaoh-necho removed him at Jerusalem, imposed a financial penalty upon Judah, and installed Eliakim, renamed Jehoiakim, as king.

Judah’s Decline

A reign lasting three months illustrates the instability that followed Josiah’s death. Judah still possessed a Davidic king, but its freedom was rapidly disappearing. The kingdom’s decline was not merely political; Chronicles consistently relates national collapse to persistent unfaithfulness and refusal to heed God’s messengers.

Application

Earthly authority can appear secure and yet pass away with great speed. Jehoahaz’s short reign warns against placing ultimate confidence in position, public approval, or political arrangements. Lasting security belongs to God alone. Believers are therefore called to use whatever responsibility they receive faithfully, humbly, and in submission to His word.
