The Nethinims. The children of Ziha, the children of Hasupha, the children of Tabbaoth, Ezra 2:43 (KJV)

The Nethinims: the children of Ziha, the children of Hasupha, the children of Tabbaoth, the children of Ophel, the children of Siha, the children of Hasidah, the children of Sisera, the children of Thamah, the children of Neziah, the children of Tipha.

Historical Context: The book of Ezra is a historical book in the Old Testament that recounts the return of the Israelites from Babylonian exile to Jerusalem and the subsequent restoration of the temple. Ezra 2 lists the names of the returning exiles and their families.

The Nethinims: The verse mentions a specific group of people called the Nethinims. The term “Nethinims” refers to temple servants who were non‑Israelites dedicated to the service of God and worked alongside the Levites. They were distinct from the Levitical tribe.

Lineage: The verse lists ten family names associated with the Nethinim families. While the significance of these specific names is not further elaborated in the verse itself, it highlights the importance of preserving genealogical records in ancient Israel to maintain their tribal and religious identities.

Symbolic Representation: The inclusion of the Nethinims in the list of returning exiles underscores the importance of every individual’s contribution to the worship and service of God. Though not of Israelite descent, the Nethinims were given an honorable role in the temple service. This serves as a reminder that God values the dedication and service of all people, regardless of their background.
