Ezra 3:11 (KJV) says: “And they sang together by course in praising and giving thanks unto the LORD; because he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.”
Historical Context: The book of Ezra focuses on the return of the Jewish exiles from Babylonian captivity to Jerusalem and the rebuilding of the temple. After many years of exile, King Cyrus of Persia issued a decree allowing the Jews to return to their homeland and rebuild the temple. In this verse, the foundation of the temple is being laid.
- Unity in Worship:
The verse describes how the people gathered together and sang in unison, praising and giving thanks to the Lord. Despite their diverse backgrounds and experiences during the exile, they came together in unity to worship God. This highlights the importance of communal worship and the power of unity among believers.
Praise and Thanksgiving: The people praised God because He is good, and His mercy endures forever towards Israel. Their praise and thanksgiving were rooted in the character of God, who is loving, faithful, and merciful. This reminds us of the importance of acknowledging and appreciating God’s goodness and mercy in our lives.
Joyful Celebration: The laying of the foundation of the temple was a significant milestone in the restoration of Jerusalem. The people shouted with a great shout of joy when they praised the Lord. Their celebration was a response to God’s faithfulness in allowing them to rebuild the temple. It serves as a reminder that God’s faithfulness and provision are worthy of celebration.
Application:
- Unity in worship: As believers, we should strive for unity in our worship gatherings, setting aside our differences and focusing on praising and glorifying God together.
- Gratitude and praise: Let us cultivate an attitude of gratitude and praise, recognizing and acknowledging God’s goodness and mercy in our lives.
