Ezra 4:5
“And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.”
Context:The book of Ezra focuses on the period of Jewish history after the Babylonian exile, when the Jews were allowed to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple. In this verse, we see a reference to opposition faced by the Jews during the reigns of Cyrus and Darius, who were Persian kings.
Opposition against the Jews:The verse mentions that “hired counsellors” were brought in to frustrate the purpose of the Jews. These hired counselors were individuals who actively worked against the Jews, likely lobbying and influencing the Persian kings to hinder the progress of the Jews in rebuilding the temple.
Persistence of opposition:The opposition against the Jews lasted throughout the reign of Cyrus, who initially allowed the Jews to return and rebuild, and continued into the reign of Darius. Despite the initial decree by Cyrus allowing the Jews to return and rebuild, there were forces at work to prevent the fulfillment of their purpose.
Spiritual application:This verse teaches us that even when God has given His people a specific purpose or task, they may face opposition and obstacles. The enemy, in various forms, may try to frustrate and hinder the work of God’s people. This opposition can take the form of discouragement, external attacks, or even manipulation and deception. However, as believers, we are called to persevere, trust in God’s promises, and continue pursuing His purposes despite the challenges we may face.
Trusting in God’s sovereignty:Despite the opposition faced by the Jews, we see in later chapters of Ezra that God’s plan was ultimately fulfilled. The temple was eventually rebuilt, and the people continued to worship and serve God. This reminds us of the sovereignty of God. Even when things seem difficult and opposition arises, we can trust that God is in control, and His purposes will ultimately prevail.
In conclusion, Ezra 4:5 highlights the opposition faced by the Jews in rebuilding the temple during the reigns of Cyrus and Darius. It reminds us that even when we have a purpose from God, we may encounter obstacles and opposition. However, as believers, we are called to trust in God’s sovereignty, persevere, and continue to pursue His purposes, knowing that He will bring about His plans in His perfect timing.
