Ezra 4:6

Posted on 18 May at 15:22

“And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on Ezra 4:6 (KJV) states: “And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.”

Historical Context:The book of Ezra provides an account of the Jews returning from the Babylonian exile to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. The events described in Ezra 4 take place during the reign of Ahasuerus, who is commonly identified as King Xerxes I, reigning from 486 to 465 BC.

  • The Accusation:

In this verse, we learn that during the early part of Ahasuerus’ reign, a group of people wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem. The following verses explain that these individuals were adversaries of the Jews who sought to hinder the rebuilding of the temple and the restoration of Jerusalem.

Opposition to the Rebuilding:Throughout the book of Ezra, we see that the Jews faced opposition from various groups who wanted to prevent the restoration of Jerusalem. In this particular instance, the adversaries wrote a letter to King Ahasuerus, making false accusations against the Jews and trying to convince the king to halt their efforts.

Historical Background:The opposition faced by the Jews during the rebuilding of the temple can be traced back to the time when the northern kingdom of Israel fell to Assyria, and its inhabitants were exiled. The adversaries mentioned in this verse were likely descendants of those who were settled in the region during the Assyrian conquest and who now saw the return of the Jews as a threat to their own interests and power.

Lessons for Christians:a) Persistence in the face of opposition: The Jewish people faced opposition and false accusations while rebuilding the temple. Likewise, as Christians, we may encounter opposition or false accusations when we seek to follow God’s calling. However, this verse reminds us to persist in our faith and continue working towards God’s purposes despite the challenges we face.

b) The importance of discernment: The adversaries who wrote the accusation sought to deceive the king and hinder the work of God. This highlights the importance of discernment for Christians. We must be vigilant in distinguishing between truth and falsehood, and rely on God’s guidance and wisdom to navigate through challenges.

c) Trusting in God’s sovereignty: Despite the opposition faced by the Jews, God remained in control. As Christians, we can find comfort in knowing that God is sovereign over all circumstances and will fulfill His purposes. Even in the face of opposition, we can trust in God’s faithfulness and seek His guidance in our lives.
