Ezra 5:16

Posted on 18 May at 13:58

Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God, which is in Ierusalem. And since that time, euen vntill now, hath it bin in building, & yet it is not finished. Ezra 5:16 (KJV)

is in Jerusalem: and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and

yet it is not finished. Ezra 5:16 (KJV)

The book of Ezra records the return of the Jewish exiles from Babylon to Jerusalem after the seventy‑year Babylonian captivity and the subsequent effort to rebuild the temple. This historical backdrop frames Ezra 5:16, which speaks of the ongoing work on the house of God, the temple in Jerusalem, the central place of worship and sacrifice that represented God’s presence among His people.

Sheshbazzar, a Persian‑appointed governor and prince of Judah, is named in the verse as having come and laid the foundation of the temple. He had received the temple vessels from Cyrus and led the first group of exiles (Ezra 1:8). While the verse highlights his role, the broader narrative also emphasizes that the foundation was laid by the collective effort of the returning community—priests, Levites, singers, porters, and other servants of the house of God.

From the moment the foundation was set, the work continued “even until now” and was still unfinished at the time the record was written in the mid‑5th century BCE. The rebuilding faced significant obstacles, including resistance from neighboring groups such as the Samaritans and various political challenges under Persian rule. Despite these hindrances, the people of Israel persisted in their commitment to restore the temple.

The passage teaches the importance of perseverance in the face of adversity. The exiles’ steadfastness demonstrates faithfulness to God’s purposes, even when progress seemed slow and opposition was strong. Their example encourages believers to remain diligent in the work God has entrusted to them, honoring His presence in their lives and continuing to build His kingdom.

The verse also reminds readers to trust God’s timing. Although the foundation had been laid, the temple remained incomplete for many years, showing that divine plans do not always align with human expectations. Trusting in God’s perfect schedule sustains faithful effort until completion.

Ultimately, the temple was completed under the reign of King Darius, confirming that perseverance, faithfulness, and trust in God’s timing lead to the fulfillment of His promises.
