Ezra 5:17

Posted on 18 May at 13:58

Now therefore, if it seeme good to the king, let there be search made in the kings treasure house which is there at Babylon, whether it be so that a decree was made of Cyrus the king, to build this house of God at Ierusalem: and let the king send his pleasure to vs concerning this matter. Ezra 5:17 (KJV)

Historical Context: The book of Ezra records the period after the Babylonian exile when the Israelites were permitted to return to their land and begin rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem. At this stage the work had been halted because of opposition from the local inhabitants.

Rebuilding the Temple: The verse records a request to King Darius for a search to be made in the king’s treasure house in Babylon. The purpose of the search was to verify whether a decree of Cyrus, the former Persian king, had indeed authorized the rebuilding of the house of God in Jerusalem. Providing this documentary evidence would give the Jewish community legal grounds to resume construction.

Importance of the Temple: The temple was far more than a physical structure; it was the central place of worship and a visible symbol of God’s presence among His people. Restoring the temple was essential for the renewal of Israel’s religious life and national identity.

The Sovereignty of God: Throughout Ezra we see God’s hand directing events to fulfill His purposes. The fact that Darius granted permission for the search and showed interest in the matter demonstrates how God can work through the hearts and decisions of earthly rulers.

Seeking God’s Will: The Jerusalem community sought the king’s pleasure concerning the temple project, carefully following the legal procedures of the empire. Their diligence reflects a commitment to obedience and a desire to align their actions with God’s will.

Application: Ezra 5:17 reminds believers to seek God’s will in every undertaking, to act with integrity, and to respect the laws of the land. It also underscores that God can use individuals in positions of authority to accomplish His purposes.

In conclusion, the passage highlights the process of confirming Cyrus’s decree, emphasizes the significance of seeking divine guidance, and affirms God’s sovereignty over both the faithful and those who hold power.
