Ezra 6:17

Posted on 18 May at 15:22

“And offered at the dedication of this house of God an hundred bullocks, two hundred rams, four hundred lambs; and for a sin offering for all Israel, twelve he goats, according to the number of the tribes of Israel.”

Historical Context: The book of Ezra records the events that took place after the Israelites were allowed to return to Jerusalem from their exile in Babylon. The temple in Jerusalem had been destroyed, but under the decree of King Cyrus of Persia, the Israelites were permitted to rebuild it.

Dedication of the Temple: Ezra 6:17 describes the dedication of the newly rebuilt temple in Jerusalem. After completing the construction, the Israelites offered sacrifices to God to consecrate and dedicate the house of God.

The Significance of Sacrifices: The offering of various animals for sacrifice was an essential aspect of Israelite worship. In this verse, we see that the Israelites presented a significant number of animals as offerings to God. The bullocks, rams, and lambs symbolized their gratitude, commitment, and desire to worship and seek God’s favour.

Sin Offering for All Israel: Additionally, twelve male goats were offered as a sin offering for all Israel, symbolizing the atonement for the sins of the entire nation. This highlights the Israelites’ acknowledgment of their need for forgiveness and reconciliation with God.

Symbolism: The numbers mentioned in this verse also hold symbolic significance. The hundred bullocks, two hundred rams, and four hundred lambs demonstrate the abundance and generosity of the people’s offerings. The twelve he goats represent the twelve tribes of Israel, emphasizing the unity and collective responsibility of the nation.

Application to Believers: While this verse specifically pertains to the dedication of the temple in Jerusalem, it reminds believers of the importance of worship, sacrifice, and seeking forgiveness. It encourages us to approach God with a heart of gratitude, commitment, and repentance, recognizing our need for His forgiveness and grace.

Overall, Ezra 6:17 illustrates the dedication of the rebuilt temple and the Israelites’ offerings to God. It emphasises the significance of sacrifices, the atonement for sin, and the unity of the nation. As believers, we can reflect on these principles and apply them in our own lives as we seek to worship and serve God.
