Ezra 7:27

Posted on 18 May at 15:22

“Blessed be the LORD God of our fathers, which hath put such a thing as this in the king’s heart, to beautify the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem:”

Historical Context: Ezra 7:27 is part of the book of Ezra, which tells the story of the Jewish people returning from exile in Babylon to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. Ezra, a priest and scribe, played a significant role in leading this restoration effort.

  • Acknowledging God’s Blessings:

The verse begins with a declaration of blessing and praise to the LORD God of their fathers. The Jewish people recognize and acknowledge God’s hand in the events that unfolded. They give thanks for the favourable circumstances that led to the beautification of the house of the LORD.

God’s Influence on the King: The verse highlights the role of God in working through the heart of the king. It states that God “put such a thing as this in the king’s heart.” This demonstrates God’s sovereignty and his ability to influence even the hearts of earthly rulers. The king’s decision to support and fund the beautification of the house of the LORD was not merely a result of human planning or persuasion but was divinely orchestrated.

Beautifying the House of the LORD: The purpose behind the king’s decision was to beautify the house of the LORD in Jerusalem. This refers to the restoration and renovation of the temple, which was of great significance to the Jewish people. The temple was the centre of their worship and the symbol of God’s presence among them. The act of beautification reflected a desire to honour and glorify God in their worship.

Application:

  • God is worthy of our praise and thanksgiving. We should recognise and acknowledge His blessings in our lives.
  • God has the power to influence the hearts and minds of people, even those in positions of authority.
  • Our worship and service to God should be marked by excellence and a desire to honour Him.

This verse also serves as a reminder that God can work through both divine intervention and human agency to accomplish His purposes. In the case of the Jewish people, God used the king’s support and funding to facilitate the restoration of the temple. It teaches us to be open and responsive to God’s leading, recognising that He can work through various channels to accomplish His plans.

Overall, Ezra 7:27 encourages us to trust in God’s providence, offer Him our gratitude, and seek ways to beautify and honour His name in our lives.
