Nehemiah 5:4

There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.

Nehemiah 5:4 (KJV)

Nehemiah 5:4 records the third of four complaints brought to Nehemiah while the Jewish people rebuilt Jerusalem’s walls. Some said, “We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.” The Persian king required a tax, called tribute, even during a famine. To pay it, the people borrowed money and used their lands and vineyards as security, placing their ancestral property at risk. This burden came on top of the earlier cries about hunger and mortgaged fields.

The verse shows the heavy burden of imperial taxation on a poor, rebuilding community. The people were not complaining against God but crying out for justice. They faced the danger of losing their property and even their freedom. The priests, Levites, and temple servants were exempt from this tribute, but the common people were not, making the burden uneven and severe. Their words reveal desperation and trust that Nehemiah would hear them.

Nehemiah 5:1-5 describes the wider crisis, including famine and debt. Nehemiah 5:6-13 records Nehemiah’s response: he became angry with the nobles and officials who charged exorbitant interest to their own people, urging them to stop and restore what had been taken. His action reflects God’s concern for justice and compassion for the vulnerable.

This verse teaches that spiritual work often faces practical pressures. The people were rebuilding the wall, yet they struggled to pay taxes and keep their land. Believers today may also face financial stress while serving God. The passage encourages honesty about such burdens and a commitment to fair treatment of others. It also reminds leaders to listen to the cries of the people and act with integrity.

God sees the burdens of His people and raises leaders who care. Nehemiah’s example challenges us to examine how we treat those in debt or difficulty. We are called to be agents of restoration, not exploitation.
