Nehemiah 5:16

Yea, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work.

Nehemiah 5:16 (KJV)

Nehemiah was a Jewish exile serving in Persia under King Artaxerxes I. When he heard that Jerusalem’s walls were broken, he sought the king’s permission to return and rebuild them. He was appointed governor of Judah and given authority to lead the work.

In Nehemiah 5:14-19, Nehemiah contrasts his conduct with that of earlier governors who had burdened the people. He refused the governor’s food allowance and did not acquire land, even though the people were in economic distress. His refusal to buy land showed that he would not exploit their hardship for personal gain.

The phrase “neither bought we any land” is deliberate. Nehemiah chose not to use his position to enrich himself. Instead, he “continued in the work of this wall,” giving his full attention to the rebuilding. His servants were also gathered to the work, showing that his whole household shared in the mission.

This verse reveals Nehemiah’s selfless leadership. He identified with the people’s suffering and did not separate himself from their labor. His integrity in authority set a clear example for the community.

Nehemiah’s refusal to profit from his office echoes the call for leaders to serve without greed. His actions also connect to the broader reform against usury and oppression in Nehemiah 5, where he urged the nobles to stop charging interest from their brothers.

Nehemiah’s example challenges us to examine our priorities. Are we fully committed to the work God has entrusted to us, or are we distracted by personal pursuits? Sometimes we must set aside personal gain to serve God’s purposes.

He also teaches us to lead by example. When we are willing to sacrifice comfort for the sake of God’s work, we inspire others to join us. Our dedication can motivate those around us to serve wholeheartedly.

Consider how you can follow Nehemiah’s model of faithful stewardship. What personal ambitions might you need to set aside for the advancement of God’s kingdom? Pray for wisdom to prioritize His work and for the courage to lead with integrity.
