Nehemiah 6:1
Now it came to pass, when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;)
Nehemiah 6:1 (KJV)
Context
Nehemiah served as cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes I. After the Jews returned from exile in Babylon, Nehemiah received God’s calling to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls. The city lay in ruins, and its broken walls left the people defenseless. Nehemiah’s enemies, Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, were local officials who opposed this work. They saw the restored walls as a threat to their own power and influence.
Meaning
In this verse, the enemies heard that the wall was finished, with no breach left in it. The phrase “no breach left therein” means the wall was complete and structurally sound. Yet Nehemiah had not yet set up the doors in the gates. This detail is significant: the city was nearly secure, but still vulnerable. The gates were essential for full protection, and their absence left an opening for danger.
Biblical connections
The enemies’ awareness of the wall’s near-completion set the stage for their next attacks. As the following verses show, they shifted from open opposition to crafty deception. The unfinished gates explain why their later attempts to lure Nehemiah away were so dangerous. The city was not yet fully defensible, so continued vigilance was necessary.
Application
Perseverance in the face of opposition: Nehemiah’s enemies tried to hinder his work, but he remained steadfast in fulfilling God’s calling. We too should persevere in our tasks, even when we face resistance.
Completion despite obstacles: Nehemiah and his team built the walls despite constant opposition. This reminds us that with God’s help, we can overcome obstacles and finish the work He gives us.
Importance of vigilance: Although the walls were built, Nehemiah still needed to set up the gates. We should not neglect any part of our work or spiritual lives, but be diligent in every detail.
Reflection
This verse captures a moment of near-completion. The major work was done, but the final securing steps remained. It teaches us to remain watchful and faithful until the very end, not assuming that partial progress means full safety. God honors those who finish what He has begun.
