Nehemiah 6:4

Yet they sent unto me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.

Nehemiah 6:4 (KJV)

Nehemiah led the Jews who had returned from Babylonian exile to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls. His enemies, Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem, tried to stop the work. In Nehemiah 6:2, they invited him to meet in the plain of Ono, but Nehemiah refused, saying he was doing a great work and could not come down. This verse records their fourth attempt, showing their persistence and his steady refusal.

The phrase “four times after this sort” emphasizes the enemies’ repeated pressure. They hoped to draw Nehemiah away from his task, perhaps to harm him or to make him appear unfaithful. Nehemiah answered “after the same manner” each time, giving the same firm reply. His consistency shows that he recognized their invitation as a trap, not a genuine opportunity. He did not argue, waver, or grow weary in his resolve.

Nehemiah’s response reflects the wisdom of Proverbs 4:27, which urges turning away from evil paths. He also models the perseverance taught in Galatians 6:9, where believers are encouraged not to grow weary in doing good. His refusal to leave his post for a dangerous meeting demonstrates that discernment and faithfulness often require a simple, repeated “no.“

Believers today face repeated distractions and pressures that can pull them from God’s calling. Nehemiah’s example teaches us to identify when a request is a trap and to answer consistently. We do not need new arguments each time; a firm, respectful refusal can protect the work God has given us. This applies to temptations, unwise compromises, and even well-meaning demands that would shift our focus.

Nehemiah’s steadfastness came from his conviction that the work was great and God-given. When opposition repeats, we can pray for discernment and strength to stay faithful. His answer was not rude but resolute, showing that we can honor others while protecting our mission. Let us ask God to help us recognize traps and to give us the same unwavering spirit.
