Proverbs 4:27

Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

Proverbs 4:27 (KJV)

The Book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom literature attributed mainly to King Solomon, known for his God-given wisdom. Proverbs contains practical advice for living a righteous and successful life, emphasizing the fear of the Lord as the beginning of wisdom. This verse concludes a father’s instruction to his son in Proverbs 4, where the path of wisdom is pictured as a journey that requires careful, deliberate steps.

The command “Turn not to the right hand nor to the left” uses the metaphor of a traveler on a narrow road. It warns against straying from the path of righteousness, whether through distractions, temptations, or detours. The second clause, “remove thy foot from evil,” is active: the believer is not merely to avoid evil passively but to take deliberate steps away from it. Even a slight deviation can lead to sin, so the path of wisdom demands focus and discipline.

The verse also warns against two kinds of error: moral evil, such as immorality and profaneness, and doctrinal error, such as false worship and superstition. The believer is to walk in the way of holiness and truth as directed by God’s word, neither cast down by adversity nor lifted up by prosperity, and neither swayed by threats nor flattery.

This verse echoes the broader biblical theme of the two ways: the way of the righteous and the way of the wicked, seen throughout Proverbs. It also connects to the call to wholehearted commitment, with the assurance that such a path leads to life and peace. The instruction to keep one’s eyes straight ahead and ponder the path of one’s feet directly precedes this command, showing that staying on the right path requires both inward focus and outward action.

  • Moral guidance: This verse encourages deliberate choices that align with godly principles, calling us to live with integrity and avoid moral compromises that hinder our relationship with God.

  • Staying focused: In a world full of distractions, it reminds us to keep our eyes fixed on God’s truth and purpose, prioritizing our walk with Him above all else.

  • Personal accountability: The verse highlights our responsibility to remove ourselves from situations, habits, or relationships that could lead us astray, making a decisive break from sin.

Proverbs 4:27 calls us to a single-minded commitment to God’s path, avoiding the extremes of self-righteousness on the right and licentiousness on the left. It reminds us that wisdom is not merely intellectual but is lived out in concrete choices and actions. By staying on the straight path and actively stepping away from evil, we grow in wisdom and deepen our relationship with God.
