Proverbs 5:3

Posted on 18 May at 15:11
Listen to this article

“For the lips of a strange woman drop as a honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom in the Old Testament, written primarily by King Solomon. It contains practical advice on various topics, including relationships, marriage, and avoiding temptation. Proverbs 5 focuses specifically on the dangers of immorality and the importance of faithfulness within marriage.

Symbolic Language:In this verse, Solomon uses vivid imagery to describe the deceptive allure of an adulterous or promiscuous woman. He compares her words and speech to a honeycomb, indicating that they are sweet and enticing. Likewise, her mouth is likened to oil, emphasizing the smoothness and charm of her words. The purpose of this description is to highlight the seductive nature of temptation and the danger it poses to one’s commitment and fidelity.

Warning against Temptation:Solomon warns his readers, particularly young men, about the consequences of succumbing to the allure of a seductive woman who is not their spouse. By describing her words as sweet as honey and her speech as smooth as oil, he emphasizes the persuasive nature of temptation. The intention is to caution against being swayed by such enticing words and to encourage faithfulness within the marital relationship.

Deception and Destructiveness:The imagery used in this verse suggests that the seductive woman may present herself as appealing and attractive, but her intentions are deceitful. The honeycomb and smooth oil are pleasant to taste and touch, but indulging in them can lead to negative consequences. Similarly, engaging in immoral relationships can bring about harm, both to oneself and to others involved, and can damage the foundation of trust and commitment in a marriage.

Application:This verse serves as a reminder to exercise caution and discernment in relationships, particularly those outside of marriage. It encourages individuals to be aware of the potential dangers of temptation and to prioritize faithfulness and commitment to their spouse. By heeding this warning, one can safeguard their own well-being, honour their marriage vows, and nurture a healthy and faithful relationship.
