Nehemiah 7:43

The Levites: the children of Jeshua, of Kadmiel, and of the children of Hodevah, seventy and four.

Nehemiah 7:43 (KJV)

Nehemiah 7:43 appears in a careful list of the people who returned to Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile. Nehemiah, a Jewish leader, helped rebuild the city walls and restore the community. This chapter records the families who came back, showing that restoration involved both buildings and people. The list also prepared the way for the city to be repopulated and worship to be renewed.

The verse names three Levite families: the children of Jeshua, of Kadmiel, and of the children of Hodevah. The Levites were descendants of Levi, one of the twelve sons of Jacob. They were set apart for temple service, helping the priests with worship, sacrifices, and teaching the Law of God. The number seventy-four counts the men from these families who returned. Such precise details show careful record-keeping and the value placed on each family’s role. The Levites’ duties were essential for the spiritual health of the nation, and their presence was vital for reestablishing proper worship according to the Law.

Ezra 2:40 lists the same Levite families and the same number, seventy-four. This parallel confirms the reliability of the record and shows the continuity of the returning community. The Levites’ role as teachers and worship leaders was essential for the spiritual health of the nation, and their presence in the restored community was vital for reestablishing proper worship according to the Law.

This verse reminds us that every person and family has a part in God’s work. The Levites’ service in worship and teaching was vital for the spiritual health of the nation. In our own communities, those who lead worship, teach Scripture, and serve behind the scenes are equally important. We should honor such contributions and recognize that God values each one. Even in a list of names and numbers, God’s faithfulness to restore His people and their worship is evident.

God’s faithfulness is seen in the preservation of His people and their worship. Even a list of names and numbers testifies to His care. As we read this verse, we can thank God for the faithful servants who help maintain worship and teaching today, and we can consider how we might support them.
