Nehemiah 7:8

Posted on 18 May at 15:21
Listen to this article

“The children of Parosh, two thousand an hundred seventy and two.”

Context: Nehemiah is a book in the Old Testament, primarily focusing on the account of the Jewish people returning from exile in Babylon to rebuild Jerusalem and the walls of the city. Nehemiah himself played a crucial role as the leader of this rebuilding effort.

Nehemiah 7:8 is part of a larger section in which Nehemiah is listing the names of the people who returned from exile. This particular verse specifically mentions the children of Parosh, along with their count, which was 2,172.

Key Points:

  • Restoration of Jerusalem: The rebuilding of Jerusalem and its walls was an essential undertaking after the exile. Nehemiah, along with other leaders and the returned exiles, worked diligently to restore the city to its former glory. The listing of the people’s names demonstrates the meticulousness and attention to detail in keeping records of those who participated in the restoration project.
  • The children of Parosh: Parosh was one of the families or clans that returned from exile. In the Hebrew culture, genealogies were significant, as they determined tribal and family affiliations, inheritance rights, and priestly eligibility. By recording the names and numbers of those who returned, Nehemiah highlights the importance of recognizing each family’s contribution to the rebuilding efforts.
  • Significance of numbers: The specific count of 2,172 is significant because it provides a sense of order and organization. It shows that there was a significant number of people from the family of Parosh who actively participated in the return and rebuilding of Jerusalem. The mention of precise numbers emphasizes the attention to detail in recording the restoration efforts.

Spiritual Lessons:

  • God values the restoration of His people: The restoration of Jerusalem signifies God’s desire to restore His people spiritually and physically. Just as the physical walls of Jerusalem were rebuilt, God desires to rebuild and restore His people’s lives, providing them with hope and a future. This demonstrates God’s faithfulness and His commitment to His covenant with His people.
  • The importance of unity and community: The listing of the returned exiles’ names reflects the unity and community spirit among the people. They came together with a common purpose and worked alongside one another to achieve a shared goal. In the same way, as believers, we are called to live in unity and community, supporting one another and working together for the advancement of God’s kingdom.
  • Every contribution matters: The recording of the number of people from the family of Parosh indicates that every individual’s contribution was recognized and valued. Similarly, in the body of Christ, every person has a unique role and contribution to make. No matter how small or seemingly insignificant, our efforts and contributions matter to God and have the potential to make a significant impact when united with others.

Overall, Nehemiah 7:8 reminds us of the importance of restoration, unity, and recognizing the value of each individual’s contribution in the work of God.
