Nehemiah 9:11

Listen to this article

“And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters.”

Nehemiah 9:11 is a part of a prayer of confession and repentance offered by the Levites on behalf of the Israelites after they returned from exile in Babylon. In this particular verse, the Levites are recounting the mighty acts of God during the time of the Exodus.

The verse refers to the miraculous event of the Israelites crossing the Red Sea. When the Israelites were fleeing from Egypt, they found themselves trapped between the pursuing Egyptian army and the sea. At this critical moment, God, through His power, divided the waters of the sea, creating a dry path for the Israelites to cross on foot. The Egyptians, who sought to harm the Israelites, followed them into the divided sea. However, as the Israelites reached the other side safely, God caused the waters to collapse, drowning the pursuing Egyptians and delivering His people from their persecutors.

This event demonstrates the power, faithfulness, and deliverance of God. It emphasises His ability to intervene on behalf of His chosen people, providing them with a way of escape and overcoming their enemies. The crossing of the Red Sea is a significant event in the history of Israel, symbolising liberation from bondage and God’s salvation.

In a broader context, Nehemiah 9:11 serves as a reminder to the Israelites of God’s providence and faithfulness throughout their history. It encourages them to reflect on the past and acknowledge God’s mighty acts, which should lead to repentance, gratitude, and renewed commitment to follow Him.

Overall, Nehemiah 9:11 is a powerful verse that highlights God’s miraculous intervention and His role as the protector and deliverer of His people. It invites believers to trust in God’s sovereignty, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges, and to remember His faithfulness in times of difficulty.
