Nehemiah 11:22 (KJV)

Nehemiah 11 lists the people who settled in Jerusalem after the city walls were rebuilt. This verse names Uzzi as the overseer of the Levites in Jerusalem, a role that required trust and responsibility.

The Levites were a tribe set apart for religious service in the tabernacle and later the temple. Uzzi’s detailed genealogy, son of Bani, son of Hashabiah, son of Mattaniah, son of Micha, shows his legitimate authority and the continuity of Levitical leadership. The latter part of the verse says the sons of Asaph, the singers, were “over the business of the house of God.” This phrase means they had practical and administrative duties in the temple, not only musical ones. Their work included managing the daily operations of worship, showing that order and care were essential in God’s house.

Asaph was a prominent Levite appointed by King David as chief musician (1 Chronicles 6:39; 25:1-2). The sons of Asaph continued this role, leading worship and ensuring that praise followed the prescribed order. Their service linked the worship of David’s time to the restored community, showing God’s faithfulness across generations.

This verse shows that God values faithful service in worship, whether leading or supporting. Singers were essential to the functioning of God’s house, reminding us that every role in worship matters. Orderly worship and dedicated service honor God. Even tasks that seem small or behind the scenes are part of His plan.

Consider how your own gifts, however small, contribute to the worship and work of God’s people. Uzzi and the singers served faithfully in their assigned tasks. Their example encourages us to serve with diligence and joy, knowing that God sees and values our work.
