Nehemiah 13:8

“And it grieved me sore: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber.”

Nehemiah 13:8 is part of the book of Nehemiah, which recounts the story of Nehemiah’s efforts to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and restore the spiritual life of the Jewish people after their return from exile. In this particular verse, Nehemiah expresses his grief and takes action against Tobiah, an Ammonite official who had been given a place within the temple chambers.

To understand the significance of this verse, let’s provide some context. Tobiah was an adversary of Nehemiah who had consistently opposed his efforts to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls (Nehemiah 2:10, 19; 4:3, 7-8). Despite this opposition, Nehemiah remained steadfast in his mission and successfully completed the wall’s construction (Nehemiah 6:15). However, during Nehemiah’s absence from Jerusalem, Tobiah was allowed to reside within the temple chambers, which were designated for sacred purposes.

Upon his return to Jerusalem, Nehemiah discovered this desecration and was greatly grieved. The temple was a holy place reserved for worship and reverence towards God, and having an enemy of God’s people dwelling there was a violation of its sanctity. Nehemiah’s sorrow and anger prompted him to take immediate action.

The phrase “therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber” indicates that Nehemiah forcefully removed Tobiah’s belongings from the temple chambers. This action symbolized the cleansing of the sacred space and the removal of any influence that could compromise the integrity of the temple. Nehemiah’s zeal for God’s house and his commitment to upholding its holiness compelled him to rectify the situation promptly.
