Nehemiah 13:9

Posted on 18 May at 15:21
Listen to this article

“Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meat offering and the frankincense.”

Context:Nehemiah was a Jewish leader and a cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes I. He played a significant role in the restoration of Jerusalem and the rebuilding of its walls after the Babylonian exile. Nehemiah’s dedication to the Lord and his zeal for righteousness are evident throughout the book.

In Nehemiah 13, after returning to Jerusalem from the Persian court, Nehemiah discovers that the people have neglected various aspects of the law. He confronts and addresses these issues, seeking to restore the people’s commitment to God’s commands.

Study:

Cleansing the chambers:In Nehemiah 13:9, Nehemiah commanded the cleansing of the chambers. These chambers were rooms within the temple or the storerooms where the offerings and utensils for the house of God were stored. The chambers had likely become unclean and disorganized due to negligence and lack of oversight.

Restoring the vessels:Nehemiah’s directive was to bring back the vessels of the house of God to their proper place. The vessels refer to sacred items used for worship and offerings, such as bowls, cups, and other utensils. Nehemiah recognized the importance of restoring order and reverence to the house of God.

Meat offering and frankincense:Along with the vessels, Nehemiah brought back the meat offering and frankincense. These were essential components of the sacrificial system prescribed by God in the Mosaic law. The meat offering, also known as a grain offering, was made of fine flour, oil, and frankincense, symbolizing gratitude, dedication, and worship to God.

Lessons and Application:

  • Attention to the house of God:Nehemiah’s commitment to cleanse the chambers and restore the vessels demonstrates the importance of maintaining reverence and order in the house of God. It serves as a reminder that we should have a deep respect and care for places of worship, ensuring they are kept clean and used appropriately.
  • Restoring spiritual order:Nehemiah’s actions go beyond physical restoration. The cleansing of the chambers and the return of the vessels symbolize the restoration of spiritual order and a renewed commitment to God’s commands. It teaches us the significance of addressing spiritual neglect or complacency in our lives and striving to return to a right relationship with God.
  • Faithfulness in worship:The mention of the meat offering and frankincense highlights the importance of faithful worship. Just as these offerings were essential in the Mosaic law, our worship should be sincere, honoring, and offered with gratitude to God. It encourages us to examine our worship practices and ensure they align with God’s desires.
  • Leadership and responsibility:Nehemiah’s role as a leader is evident in this verse. As a leader, he took charge and commanded the cleansing of the chambers. It reminds us of the responsibility leaders have to address and correct spiritual issues within their spheres of influence, guiding others in the ways of God.

In conclusion, Nehemiah 13:9 showcases Nehemiah’s commitment to restoring the house of God and revitalizing the people’s dedication to the Lord. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining reverence, order, and faithfulness in worship. As we study this verse, we can learn valuable lessons about our own spiritual lives, leadership, and the significance of worshiping God in spirit and truth.
