Nehemiah 13:12

Then brought all Judah the tithe of the corn and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries.

Nehemiah 13:12 (KJV)

Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem to rebuild its walls and restore the city. His mission included renewing the spiritual and moral life of the people. By the time of Nehemiah 13, the walls were complete, but the people had again neglected God’s commands, including the support of the temple and its workers.

The Levites and musicians, who served in the temple, had not received their portions, so they had left their duties to work in their fields (Nehemiah 13:10). Nehemiah confronted the officials, asking why the house of God was neglected, and he called the people together to correct this failure (Nehemiah 13:11). Verse 12 records the positive result: all Judah brought the tithe of grain, new wine, and oil to the treasuries.

The tithe was a tenth of the produce, as commanded in the Law. It included corn (grain), new wine, and oil, which were the main agricultural products of the land. These were brought to the temple treasuries, the storehouses where offerings were kept for the support of the priests and Levites. The phrase “all Judah” shows that the response was united, not just from a few families or villages.

This act was a restoration of the practice commanded in the Law, where tithes supported the Levites so they could devote themselves to the Law of the LORD (Nehemiah 10:36-37, Numbers 18:12,24). By bringing their tithes, the people acknowledged God’s ownership of their harvest and their dependence on His provision. They also enabled the temple workers to return to their proper service.

The tithe was not merely a tax but a way to honor God and sustain the worship He had established. When the people neglected it, the work of the temple suffered. When they obeyed, the house of God was cared for, and the Levites could resume their duties. This pattern shows that faithful giving is tied to the health of the whole community of faith.

Nehemiah’s reform teaches us to examine our own priorities. Do we support those who serve God’s people? Our giving should be regular and generous, reflecting our trust in God’s provision. The people’s obedience also reminds us that when leaders call for reform, we should respond with a willing heart, not with reluctance.

  • Faithful stewardship: The people brought their tithes, teaching us to manage the resources God gives us and to give back to His work.

  • Obedience to God’s commands: Tithing was an act of worship and trust. When we obey God’s instructions, we honor Him and show our faith in His faithfulness.

  • Supporting ministry and the poor: Tithes supported the Levites and also helped those in need. Our giving contributes to the ministry of the church and extends care to the less fortunate.

Nehemiah 13:12 shows the joy of a community that responds to correction with unity. The people did not argue or delay; they brought their tithes to the treasuries. This verse encourages us to examine our own giving and to support the work of God’s kingdom with a cheerful and obedient heart. When we do, we participate in the restoration of worship and the care of God’s people.
