Nehemiah 13:16
There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish and all maner of ware, and solde on the Sabbath vnto the children of Iudah, and in Ierusalem. Nehemiah 13:16 (KJV)
This verse is part of the concluding chapter of the book of Nehemiah, which provides an account of Nehemiah’s efforts to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and restore the spiritual and social integrity of the people.
In Nehemiah 13, Nehemiah returns to Jerusalem after being away for a period of time and discovers that the people have reverted to various practices that are inconsistent with the laws of God. One specific issue Nehemiah addresses is the violation of the Sabbath.
In verse 15, Nehemiah notes that the people had failed to bring in the timber required for the doors of the house of God, a matter he rebuked the priests for.
Nehemiah confronts the people, rebukes them for their actions, and takes measures to rectify the situation.
In verse 16, Nehemiah specifically mentions that men from Tyre were dwelling in Jerusalem and selling goods, including fish and various merchandise, on the Sabbath to the children of Judah. This implies that the people of Judah were not only engaging in regular commerce on the Sabbath but were also actively participating in these transactions by purchasing goods.
Nehemiah’s response to this violation is found in Nehemiah 13:17-18, where he speaks to the nobles of Judah, reminding them of the sins committed by their forefathers that led to the destruction of Jerusalem. He warns them against further desecration of the Sabbath and takes decisive action by shutting the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath begins and not reopening them until after the Sabbath has ended. He appoints Levites to guard the gates and prevent any commercial activity from taking place on the holy day.
This passage serves as a reminder of the importance of honoring the Sabbath and the significance of rest and worship in the lives of God’s people. God had commanded the Israelites to observe the Sabbath as a day of rest, a sign of their covenant with Him (Exodus 20:8-11). By allowing the violation of the Sabbath, the people of Judah were disregarding God’s commandments and neglecting their relationship with Him.
Nehemiah’s actions highlight the need for leaders to take a stand against disobedience and to lead by example in upholding God’s laws. His commitment to restoring the sanctity of the Sabbath serves as a lesson for us today, reminding us to prioritise worship, rest, and spiritual renewal in our lives.
In conclusion, Nehemiah 13:16 addresses the violation of the Sabbath by the people of Judah, who engaged in commerce on this holy day. Nehemiah, as a faithful leader, took decisive action to restore the observance of the Sabbath and uphold the commandments of God. This passage teaches us the importance of honouring the Sabbath and the responsibility of leaders to uphold God’s laws in their communities.
