In those dayes sawe I in Iudah, some treading wine presses on the Sabbath, and bringing in sheaues, and lading asses, as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all maner of burdens, which they brought into Ierusalem on the Sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they solde victuals. Nehemiah 13:15 (KJV)

In those days saw I in Judah

some treading winepresses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all

manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified

against them in the day wherein they sold victuals. Nehemiah 13:15 (KJV)

Nehemiah was a Jewish leader who played a significant role in the restoration of Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile. He led the effort to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem and reform the spiritual life of the people. In Nehemiah 13, Nehemiah returns to Jerusalem after being away for some time and discovers that the people have fallen back into sinful practices.

Nehemiah, upon his return to Jerusalem, witnessed people engaging in work and business activities on the Sabbath, which was a day set apart as holy and dedicated to rest and worship. He saw individuals treading wine presses, harvesting crops, and bringing their goods into Jerusalem to sell. This violated the commandment to observe the Sabbath and honor it as a day of rest (Exodus 20:8-11).

Nehemiah, as a faithful leader, was deeply troubled by what he saw. He recognized the importance of observing the Sabbath and the significance of keeping God’s commandments. He took immediate action by testifying against those who were engaged in these activities on the Sabbath. He confronted them and sought to correct their behavior.

Nehemiah’s actions were not based on personal opinion but on the commandments of God. By confronting the people and testifying against their actions, he reminded them of the importance of obedience to God’s laws and the need to honor the Sabbath. His actions were driven by his desire to restore righteousness and faithfulness among the people.

The story of Nehemiah’s confrontation serves as a reminder to us about the importance of obedience to God’s commandments. It highlights the need for us to examine our own lives and identify areas where we may be compromising our commitment to God’s principles. Just as Nehemiah was concerned about the spiritual condition of the people, we should also be concerned about our own spiritual lives and strive to live in accordance with God’s Word.

Furthermore, the passage also emphasizes the significance of honoring the Sabbath, which was given as a gift to God’s people for rest and worship. While the specifics of Sabbath observance may vary among different Christian traditions, the principle of setting aside a day for rest, worship, and renewal remains relevant. It is a time to prioritize our relationship with God, rejuvenate our souls, and find physical and spiritual rest in Him.

In conclusion, Nehemiah 13:15 demonstrates the importance of obedience to God’s commandments and the need for us to confront and correct sinful practices in our lives. It serves as a reminder of the value of observing the Sabbath and prioritizing our relationship with God. By learning from Nehemiah’s example, we can strive to live faithfully and honor God in all areas of our lives.
