Job 18:7
The steps of his strength shall be straitened, and his own counsel shall cast him down.
Job 18:7 (KJV)
Context
The book of Job is a poetic and philosophical exploration of human suffering and God’s justice. Job, a righteous man, endures immense loss, and his friends come to comfort him. Yet their explanations for his suffering are often misguided. In this verse, Bildad the Shuhite speaks, presenting his view of the fate of the wicked. His speech is part of a larger section describing the calamities that overtake the wicked (Job 18:5-21).
Meaning
The first phrase, “The steps of his strength shall be straitened,” means that the power of the wicked will be limited and constrained. In health and prosperity, a person can take large, confident steps toward fame, wealth, and family. But in judgment, that strong stride is shortened, and his vigor is weakened. He can no longer walk freely or carry out his plans without restriction.
The second phrase, “his own counsel shall cast him down,” shows that the wicked person’s own schemes become the cause of his ruin. His plans and advice backfire, tripping him up. This is a poetic way of saying that the wicked are ensnared by their own devices. Their self-reliance and cunning become the instrument of their downfall.
Biblical connections
This principle appears elsewhere in Scripture. In Job 5:13, God catches the wise in their own craftiness. Psalm 7:16 describes the mischief of the wicked returning upon their own head. These passages reinforce the theme that human schemes cannot succeed against God’s justice. The immediate context also includes the preceding verse about the light of the wicked being put out (Job 18:5-6) and the following verses about being ensnared by his own feet (Job 18:8-10).
Application
This verse warns against pride and self-reliance. Human strength and wisdom are finite and insufficient. When we depend only on our own understanding, we may face restrictions and failure. Instead, we are encouraged to rely on God’s strength and seek His counsel, for He is the source of true wisdom (Proverbs 3:5-6).
The verse also cautions us about the counsel we follow. Wrong advice, or advice that contradicts God’s truth, can lead to harmful outcomes. We should be discerning, testing every plan against God’s Word. Humility and trust in God are essential, even in trials. Job’s story reminds us to remain faithful, trusting God’s purposes regardless of our circumstances.
Reflection
Consider your own plans and ambitions. Are you relying on your own strength, or are you seeking God’s direction? The wicked fall because their own counsel trips them. But those who humble themselves and trust in God find a secure path. Let this verse lead you to examine your heart, surrender your schemes, and place your confidence in the Lord, who alone gives true stability and peace.
