Job 18:7

Posted on 18 May at 15:19
Listen to this article

“The steps of his strength shall be straitened, and his own counsel shall cast him down.”

Context:The book of Job is a poetic and philosophical exploration of the problem of human suffering. Job, a righteous man, experiences immense loss and suffering, and his friends come to comfort and counsel him. However, they often present misguided explanations for his suffering. In this particular verse, Bildad the Shuhite speaks, presenting his view of the fate of the wicked.

The Steps of His Strength Shall Be Straitened:This phrase implies that the strength or power of the wicked will be limited or constrained. It suggests that those who rely on their own strength or might will face restrictions and limitations in their endeavours. This could refer to their ability to carry out their plans, achieve success, or exercise control over their circumstances.

His Own Counsel Shall Cast Him Down:This phrase suggests that the wicked will be brought low or destroyed by their own schemes and strategies. It implies that their own advice or plans will backfire, leading to their downfall or ruin. It points to the principle of reaping what one sows, where the wicked face the consequences of their own actions and intentions.

Spiritual Application:While this verse specifically addresses the fate of the wicked, it also carries broader spiritual principles that can be applied to our lives today.

  • Dependence on Human Strength:The verse highlights the limitations of relying solely on our own strength and wisdom. It serves as a reminder that human power and understanding are finite and insufficient. Instead, we are encouraged to rely on God’s strength and seek His counsel, as He is the source of true wisdom and guidance (Proverbs 3:5-6).
  • Consequences of Wrong Counsel:The verse also emphasises the potential consequences of following wrong counsel or relying on faulty advice. It warns against adopting a mindset that is contrary to God’s truth and wisdom, as it can lead to detrimental outcomes. We should be discerning in choosing the advice we heed and ensure that it aligns with God’s Word.
  • Humility and Trust in God:Job’s suffering throughout the book teaches us the importance of humility and trust in God, even in the midst of trials. While the verse focuses on the fate of the wicked, Job’s story encourages us to remain faithful to God, trusting His plans and purposes, regardless of our circumstances.

In conclusion, Job 18:7 (KJV) provides insights into the fate of the wicked and the consequences of relying on human strength and counsel. It serves as a reminder to seek God’s wisdom, trust in Him, and be discerning in the counsel we follow.
