Job 24:18
He is swift as the waters; their portion is cursed in the earth: he beholdeth not the way of the vineyards.
Job 24:18 (KJV)
Context
The Book of Job is a poetic and philosophical exploration of human suffering and God’s justice. Job, a righteous man, suffers deeply while his friends offer various explanations for his plight. In this chapter, Job describes the apparent success of the wicked and the certainty of their judgment.
Meaning
“He is swift as the waters” means the wicked are suddenly swept away, like foam on a flood. Their destruction comes quickly, not slowly. “Their portion is cursed in the earth” shows that whatever inheritance or possessions they have is under God’s curse. Their blessings are blasted and come to nothing. “He beholdeth not the way of the vineyards” means the wicked no longer walk the paths to their vineyards. They are cut off from enjoying the fruit of their labor. In life they ignored the path of righteousness, and now they are denied even the way to their own fields.
Biblical connections
This verse connects with Proverbs 3:33, which says the curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked. Both passages teach that God’s curse rests on the wicked, even when they seem to prosper for a time. The larger passage of Job 24:18-24 affirms that though the wicked may be exalted briefly, they are brought low and cut off like heads of grain.
Application
Job’s words warn us not to envy the temporary success of those who act unjustly. Their prosperity is fragile and cursed. We are called to trust in God’s justice, even when it seems delayed. We should also examine our own lives, asking whether we are walking the way of the vineyards—the path of careful cultivation and righteousness—or neglecting it.
Reflection
God sees the ways of all people. He gives the wicked security for a time, but His eyes are on their ways. For the righteous, this is a comfort: God will ultimately deal justly with evil. We can rest in His timing and remain faithful, knowing that true justice belongs to Him.
