Job 34:30

That the hypocrite reign not, lest the people be ensnared.

Job 34:30 (KJV)

Elihu speaks these words within his larger response to Job, defending God’s justice and sovereignty. In the preceding verses, he describes how God breaks the mighty and hears the cry of the poor and afflicted. Verse 29 speaks of God giving quietness and hiding his face, whether against a nation or a man. Verse 30 then states that the hypocrite does not reign, lest the people be ensnared.

The term “hypocrite” here refers not merely to a religious pretender but to a political hypocrite—one who feigns humanity, goodness, and care for the people, promising to uphold rights and liberties, yet once in power throws off the mask and becomes a tyrant. God, in His providence, either prevents such a person from ascending to the throne or hastens their ruin, showing mercy to the people by sparing them from being ensnared. The verse emphasizes God’s active sovereignty over rulers and His protective care for the people, implying that ungodly rulers are a danger because they lay snares for those under them.

This teaching aligns with Daniel 2:21, where God removes and sets up kings, and with Proverbs 29:2, which notes that when the wicked bear rule, the people mourn. Elihu’s argument is part of his broader insistence that God governs the world righteously, and that Job should not accuse God of injustice.

Believers can take comfort that God is not indifferent to the character of those who rule. He sees the true heart of every leader and acts in His time to protect His people from destructive influence. This truth encourages prayer for rulers and trust in God’s sovereign hand, even when political circumstances seem dire.

How often do we judge God’s justice by outward circumstances? Elihu reminds us that God’s ways are higher than ours, and that He is at work even in the rise and fall of nations. We are called to humility before His wisdom, trusting that He will ultimately prevent the hypocrite from reigning and ensnaring His people.
