Daniel 2:21

And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:

Context

Daniel speaks these words while praising God after the king’s dream is revealed to him. Nebuchadnezzar had demanded that his wise men tell him both the dream and its meaning, and when they could not, he ordered their execution. Daniel and his friends prayed, and God revealed the secret to Daniel in a night vision. This verse is part of Daniel’s prayer of thanksgiving before he goes to the king.

Meaning

“And he changeth the times and the seasons”: God determines the appointed periods and events of history. He is not subject to time; He rules over it. This phrase affirms His sovereignty over the unfolding of human affairs.

“He removeth kings, and setteth up kings”: God raises up rulers and brings them down. Political authority is never ultimate; it is always subject to His will. This truth is demonstrated in the dream itself, where successive kingdoms rise and fall according to God’s plan.

“He giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding”: True wisdom and knowledge are gifts from God. Those who are wise are not self-made; they have received what they have from Him. This is especially fitting here, because Daniel’s ability to interpret the dream came directly from God’s revelation.

Biblical connections
