Job 39:16
She is hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers: her labour is in vain without fear;
Job 39:16 (KJV)
Context
God speaks to Job from the whirlwind, asking questions Job cannot answer. In this part of the speech, God points to the ostrich as one creature whose ways display His wisdom. The ostrich behaves differently from other birds, and this difference belongs to the created order that humans cannot fully understand. God’s questions challenge Job’s understanding of creation and divine wisdom, turning his focus from his own suffering to the grandeur and complexity of the world.
Meaning
The verse says the ostrich is “hardened against her young ones, as though they were not hers.” She shows little care for her eggs or chicks. She leaves them on the ground, where they may be crushed or taken by wild animals, as the surrounding verses describe (Job 39:14-15). Her “labour is in vain without fear” suggests that her work often comes to nothing because she does not guard it carefully. The Hebrew text and many translations agree that the ostrich appears harsh and indifferent, yet God does not condemn her. He simply uses her behavior to show that His creation includes many patterns people cannot explain. The apparent neglect is not a moral failure but part of the intricate design of the natural world.
Biblical connections
Lamentations 4:3 also mentions the ostrich, but there the bird is used as an example of cruelty. Here the purpose is different. God is not blaming the ostrich for being a bad parent. Instead, He is showing that His wisdom is greater than human understanding. The same creature can serve different lessons in different contexts. This contrast reminds us that a single detail in creation may carry varied meanings depending on the message God intends.
Application
This verse invites humility. When we see something in nature or in life that seems strange or wasteful, we can remember that God’s ways are not always our ways. The ostrich’s apparent neglect does not mean God made a mistake. It means His design is more complex than we can grasp. We can trust Him even when we do not see the reason behind His actions. God’s sovereignty covers every creature, including those whose behavior puzzles us.
Reflection
Job suffered greatly and wanted answers from God. Instead of explaining Job’s suffering, God showed him the vastness of creation. The ostrich is one small example of that vastness. If God cares for such a strange bird, He certainly cares for His people. We can rest in His wisdom, knowing that what looks like failure to us may be part of His perfect plan. His unfathomable wisdom is a reason for trust, not doubt.
