Job 41:31

He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment.

Job 41:31 (KJV)

This verse belongs to God’s speech to Job, where He describes Leviathan, a creature of terrifying power. The surrounding verses (Job 41:25-30) tell of Leviathan’s strength and the fear it causes. Here, the imagery turns to the sea itself. God is not merely giving information; He is revealing His own majesty through the creature He has made.

“He maketh the deep to boil like a pot” pictures the sea churning violently, as if heated. “He maketh the sea like a pot of ointment” compares the stirred water to a bubbling, fragrant mixture. Both images show Leviathan agitating the depths until they foam. This is not a calm sea but one thrown into chaos by the creature’s movements. The comparison to ointment suggests a rich, foamy lather, emphasizing the force and scale of the disturbance.

Hebrew poetry often uses parallel lines to reinforce one idea. Here, the two lines together stress the creature’s immense power over the sea. In Scripture, the deep sometimes represents chaos and untamed forces. Leviathan, as a symbol of that chaos, is still under God’s authority, since God describes and controls it. The passage also points to God’s sovereignty over all creation, including the most fearsome and untamable elements.

If God governs even Leviathan and the raging sea, then no force in our lives lies outside His control. We can trust Him with situations that seem wild or overwhelming. This truth calls us to humility, recognizing that our power is small compared to His. When life feels like a boiling sea, we remember that God is greater.

God’s description of Leviathan reminds us of His unmatched majesty. The same God who stills the storm also rules the deepest chaos. Our proper response is awe and humble trust in His wisdom and strength. He alone deserves our worship and our confidence.
