Psalms 10:16

Listen to this article

“The LORD is King for ever and ever: the heathen are perished out of his land.”

Context:Psalm 10 is a lament of the psalmist about the wickedness and arrogance of the wicked. The psalmist expresses his longing for God to intervene and deliver the oppressed from the hands of the wicked.

The LORD is King for ever and ever:This verse acknowledges the eternal kingship of God. It emphasizes that God reigns and rules over all creation and time. Unlike human kings who may come and go, God’s kingship is eternal and unchanging.

The heathen are perished out of his land:The word “heathen” refers to the nations or the Gentiles who do not acknowledge the God of Israel. In this verse, it signifies the wicked and the oppressors. The psalmist expresses his confidence that God will ultimately judge and deal with the wicked, causing them to perish or be destroyed.

Application:

  • – Trust in God’s eternal kingship: As believers, we can find comfort and security in knowing that God is the everlasting King. No matter what challenges or difficulties we face in life, we can trust that God is in control and will ultimately bring justice and righteousness.
  • – God’s sovereignty over nations: This verse reminds us that God is not only the God of a particular people or nation but the ruler over all nations. The wicked may seem to prosper for a time, but God has the final say, and the day will come when justice will prevail.
  • – Prayer for justice and deliverance: Like the psalmist, we can pour out our hearts to God in times of trouble and injustice. We can bring our concerns and burdens before Him, trusting that He hears our prayers and will act on our behalf.

Connection to the broader biblical themes:

  • – God’s eternal kingship: This verse echoes the broader biblical theme of God’s sovereignty and His eternal rule over the universe. Scriptures such as Psalm 145:13, Daniel 4:34-35, and Revelation 11:15 affirm God’s everlasting kingship.
  • – God’s justice: Throughout the Bible, we find instances of God’s justice and His concern for the oppressed. Psalm 103:6 says, “The LORD executes righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed.” This verse in Psalm 10 expresses the psalmist’s longing for God’s justice to be manifested.
