nnPsalms, often called the Psalter, is a collection of 150 inspired songs, prayers, praises, laments, and meditations that have shaped the worship of God’s people for generations. Written by various authors including David, Asaph, the sons of Korah, and others, the book gives voice to the full range of human experience before God.

The Psalms speak in many tones. Some overflow with praise and joyful worship, exalting God’s greatness, kingship, faithfulness, and mighty works. Others are cries from the depths, expressing sorrow, fear, repentance, confusion, and longing for deliverance. Together they teach that every season of life may be brought honestly into the presence of the Lord.

Throughout the book, God is revealed as Creator, King, Shepherd, Judge, Deliverer, and Refuge. The Psalms celebrate His holiness, mercy, steadfast love, justice, and covenant faithfulness. They repeatedly call the righteous to trust Him, seek Him, listen to His word, and remember His works.

Many psalms are deeply personal, yet they also belong to the worshipping community. They were sung in public praise, used in times of repentance, and treasured in moments of thanksgiving. The book therefore serves both as a pattern for private devotion and as a guide for the gathered people of God.

Psalms also contains rich wisdom and strong prophetic hope. It contrasts the way of the righteous with the way of the wicked, points to the blessedness of trusting the Lord, and includes royal and messianic themes that anticipate the reign of God’s anointed King.

Overall, Psalms is a book of worship, faith, prayer, repentance, and hope. It teaches believers to bring adoration, grief, gratitude, and expectation to God, and it shows that the life of faith is sustained by knowing His character, remembering His works, and resting in His unfailing mercy.
