Psalms 14:2

Posted on 18 May at 15:18
Listen to this article

“The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.”

1. Context: Psalm 14 is attributed to David and is categorised as one of the psalms of lament. It reflects on the condition of humanity and the nature of God. It emphasises the reality of human depravity and the need for God’s intervention.

2. The LORD’s perspective: The verse begins with the statement that the LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men. This signifies God’s omniscience and His ability to see and understand the actions and thoughts of humanity. It implies that nothing is hidden from God’s sight. He is aware of our circumstances and observes our behaviour.

3. Understanding and seeking God: The purpose of the LORD’s observation is to find those who understand and seek Him. Understanding here refers to spiritual discernment and wisdom. It implies having insight into the ways of God and His truth. Seeking God implies a genuine desire to know and have a relationship with Him.

4. The state of humanity: The verse suggests that the LORD’s search is motivated by the fact that there are few who truly understand and seek Him. It implies that the general condition of humanity is one of spiritual ignorance and apathy towards God. It echoes the broader biblical teaching that all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23).

5. God’s desire for relationship: Despite the prevailing spiritual condition, the verse implies that God desires people to seek Him. It reveals God’s longing for a relationship with His creation. Throughout the Bible, God continually reaches out to humanity, inviting them to turn to Him and experience His grace and salvation.

6. Application: Psalm 14:2 serves as a reminder to us today to cultivate a heart that seeks after God. It challenges us to seek understanding and pursue a genuine relationship with Him. It reminds us that God is aware of our thoughts, actions, and motivations. Therefore, we should strive to align ourselves with His will and seek His guidance in all aspects of our lives.
