Psalms 17:2

Listen to this article

“Let my sentence come forth from thy presence; let thine eyes behold the things that are equal.”

Context:Psalm 17 is considered a prayer of David during a time of distress. He begins by appealing to God, declaring his righteousness and asking for God’s attention to his prayer (Psalm 17:1). The verse in question (Psalm 17:2) is the continuation of David’s plea for God’s intervention.

“Let my sentence come forth from thy presence”:David’s use of the word “sentence” in this context is not referring to a legal judgment but rather to a fair verdict or decision. David desires that his cause or case be presented before God. He seeks divine justice, where God Himself would assess the situation and pass judgment. By asking for his sentence to come forth from God’s presence, David acknowledges God’s authority and the ultimate source of justice.

“Let thine eyes behold the things that are equal”:David’s request for God’s eyes to behold the things that are equal emphasizes his desire for fairness and equity. He desires that God would see the situation impartially and weigh all factors without bias. David recognizes that God’s eyes, being all-knowing and just, can discern what is right and what is not. He desires that God’s judgment would be based on righteousness and equity, ensuring that justice prevails.

  • Application:David’s plea in Psalm 17:2 can resonate with believers today, especially when facing unjust circumstances or when seeking justice and fairness. It reminds us of the importance of taking our concerns and grievances to God, trusting in His ability to bring about justice.

As followers of Christ, we can find assurance in knowing that God is not only aware of our situation but also intimately concerned with it. We can approach Him with our petitions, confident that He will hear us and consider our case. However, it is crucial to align our hearts with God’s will and seek His justice rather than our own vindication.

Additionally, this verse reminds us of the importance of justice and fairness in our interactions with others. As we encounter situations where we have the power to influence the outcome, whether as leaders, parents, or simply in our daily interactions, we should strive to emulate God’s justice and fairness.

In conclusion, Psalm 17:2 expresses David’s heartfelt plea to God for justice and fairness. It reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s presence and guidance when facing injustices and the need for equity in our dealings with others.
