Psalms 17:12

Listen to this article

“Like as a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.”

This verse is part of Psalm 17, which is attributed to King David. In this particular psalm, David is pleading with God for deliverance from his enemies. Let’s explore the meaning and significance of Psalm 17:12 in context.

Symbolism of a Lion:In this verse, David uses the imagery of a lion to describe the behaviour of his enemies. The lion is known for its strength, ferocity, and stealth when hunting its prey. By employing this metaphor, David paints a vivid picture of his adversaries’ malicious intent and their efforts to attack him.

Greediness and Lurking:The lion is described as “greedy of his prey” and “lurking in secret places.” These phrases emphasise the relentless pursuit of David by his enemies. They eagerly desire to harm him and are actively seeking opportunities to do so, much like a lion lying in wait for its prey. This highlights the imminent danger David faces.

Spiritual Application:Psalm 17:12 can also be understood from a spiritual standpoint. The Bible often uses lions to represent Satan or his demonic forces. The lion in this verse could symbolise the devil, who is described as a “roaring lion” seeking someone to devour (1 Peter 5:8). It reminds us of the spiritual warfare believers face, where the enemy seeks to attack, tempt, and hinder their faith and relationship with God.

  • Trust in God’s Deliverance:The entire psalm reflects David’s trust in God’s deliverance and justice. While he acknowledges the threats and dangers surrounding him, he also expresses his confidence that God will come to his aid. David seeks refuge in God and appeals to His righteousness to vindicate him against his enemies.

In conclusion, Psalm 17:12 portrays the fierce and predatory nature of David’s adversaries, using the imagery of a lion. It serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by believers in spiritual warfare, where the enemy seeks to harm and hinder. Nonetheless, the psalm as a whole emphasises the importance of trusting in God’s deliverance and justice in the face of opposition.
