Arise, O Lord, disappoint him, cast him downe: deliuer my soule from the wicked, which is thy sword: Psalms 17:13 (KJV)

This verse is part of Psalm 17, which is attributed to King David. In this psalm, David cries out to God for deliverance from his enemies and asks for protection.

Arise, O Lord: Here, David appeals to God to rise up and take action. It is a plea for God’s intervention and assistance in his time of trouble. David recognizes that God is the source of his strength and deliverance.

Disappoint him, cast him down: David asks God to disappoint or frustrate his enemies and cast them down. He desires that God would thwart their plans and bring them to nothing. This demonstrates David’s trust in God’s justice and his reliance on God to vindicate him.

Deliver my soul from the wicked, with thy sword: David seeks God’s deliverance from the wicked individuals who are opposing him. He asks God to use His sword as the instrument of deliverance, recognizing God’s sovereign power to act on his behalf.

Overall, Psalm 17:13 reflects David’s trust in God’s power and sovereignty. He looks to God as his ultimate source of protection and deliverance.

How does David’s plea for God’s intervention in Psalm 17:13 resonate with your own experiences or challenges? In what ways can you apply the concept of relying on God’s strength and deliverance when facing opposition or difficulties in your own life? How does the understanding that God is ultimately in control and can frustrate the plans of the wicked bring you comfort and hope? How can you trust in God’s sovereignty even when it seems like your enemies or adversaries are prevailing? Remember to read the entire Psalm 17 in context to gain a deeper understanding of David’s heartfelt prayer and the themes explored throughout the psalm.
