Psalms 18:15

Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuke, O Lord, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils.

Psalms 18:15 (KJV)

Psalm 18 is a song of thanksgiving by David after God delivered him from his enemies, including King Saul. This verse uses vivid images of nature to describe God’s saving strength. The psalm celebrates God’s mighty intervention in the world to rescue His people.

The “channels of waters” and the “foundations of the world” being seen and discovered picture God’s rebuke and the blast of His nostrils. These are poetic ways of saying that God’s anger and command are so mighty that the deepest seas and the earth’s hidden bases are laid bare. The same event appears in 2 Samuel 22:16, where the channels are called “the channels of the sea.” This language recalls the drying up of the Red Sea when Israel passed through, showing that God controls all creation.

God’s “rebuke” and “the breath of His nostrils” are human-like descriptions of His fierce power. They show that His word alone is enough to shake the world. Nothing stays hidden when He acts. The imagery of cosmic upheaval portrays God’s presence and wrath in creation, reassuring believers of His ability to save.

This verse connects to the exodus, when God parted the sea to save His people. It also points to God’s ability to uncover the hidden plans of enemies. As the Jewish commentator Aben Ezra noted, God can expose the deepest secrets and schemes of those who oppose Him. The verse emphasizes that God’s power is absolute and that He can uncover the deepest secrets and schemes of enemies.

Believers can take courage from this verse. The God who controls the forces of nature is on their side. When facing challenges or enemies, they can trust in His strength and deliverance. He is powerful enough to intervene in any situation. His rebuke alone is sufficient to expose and overturn the natural order, underscoring His supreme authority and the certainty of His deliverance for His people.

Reflect on how God has shown His power and faithfulness in your life. Remember that His rebuke can change circumstances in an instant. Let this verse remind you to seek His help and rest in His sovereign care.

Consider the greatness of God’s power. He can expose what is hidden and overturn the natural order to rescue His people. This same God hears your prayers and acts on your behalf. The verse reassures believers of God’s ability to save and vindicate them, even when the world seems to be against them.
