Psalms 18:47

Listen to this article

“It is God that avengeth me, and subdueth the people under me.”

Context: Psalm 18 is attributed to King David, and it is a psalm of thanksgiving and praise for God’s deliverance from his enemies, particularly King Saul. This psalm celebrates God’s faithfulness and power in rescuing David from his adversaries and establishing him as the king of Israel.

Recognition of God’s role: The verse begins by acknowledging that it is God who avenges and vindicates the psalmist. David recognised that his success and victory over his enemies were ultimately due to the intervention and justice of God. It is important to note that David did not take personal revenge but entrusted justice to God.

God’s role in subduing the people: The verse also acknowledges that God “subdueth the people under me.” Here, David attributes the subjugation or subduing of his enemies to God’s power. It signifies that David’s victories were not solely the result of his own military prowess or strategy but ultimately because of God’s intervention on his behalf.

God as the ultimate authority: By acknowledging God as the one who subdues the people, David recognises God’s sovereignty and authority over all things. David acknowledges that his position as king and his victories were a result of God’s guidance and intervention. This verse highlights the humble acknowledgment of God’s role in David’s life and leadership.

Application to our lives: As we study this verse, we can draw lessons for our own lives. It reminds us that our successes and victories are ultimately from God. We are called to recognise that it is God who fights our battles and avenges us. This should lead us to humble gratitude, giving God the glory for the triumphs and accomplishments we experience.

Furthermore, this verse encourages us to trust in God’s justice and not take matters into our own hands. We can find comfort in knowing that God is the ultimate judge who sees all and will execute justice in His perfect timing.
