Psalms 22:20
“Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.”
Psalm 22:20 (KJV) says: “Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.”
Context: Psalm 22 is a poetic psalm attributed to King David. It is known as a Messianic psalm because it contains prophetic elements that are fulfilled in the life and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The psalm begins with a cry of distress but ultimately ends in a declaration of praise.
Deliverance from the sword: In this verse, the psalmist pleads for deliverance from the sword. The sword symbolises physical danger and violence. It represents the enemies and the threats they pose. The psalmist is crying out to God, asking Him to save his soul from impending harm and death.
My darling from the power of the dog: The psalmist also asks for deliverance for his “darling” from the power of the dog. The term “darling” is often interpreted as a metaphor for the psalmist’s life or his very being. The “dog” in this context can represent the enemies or those who oppress and seek to harm the psalmist. It may also symbolise the forces of evil that oppose God’s people.
Symbolic meaning: This verse has broader symbolic meaning in a Messianic context. Jesus, as the ultimate fulfilment of Psalm 22, experienced the agony of the cross, where He cried out to God in distress. The “sword” could symbolise the Roman soldiers who crucified Jesus. The “dog” could represent the religious leaders and Roman authorities who opposed Him. It points to Jesus’ plea for deliverance from the suffering and death He was about to endure.
Spiritual application: As believers, we can apply this verse to our lives. We all face various forms of danger, opposition, and spiritual battles. Like the psalmist, we can cry out to God for deliverance from these threats. We can seek His protection, guidance, and strength in times of trouble. The psalm reminds us that God is our refuge and our deliverer, and He can rescue us from any situation.
Overall, Psalm 22:20 is a plea for deliverance and protection from the psalmist’s enemies. It also holds prophetic significance in pointing to Jesus’ cry for deliverance on the cross. As believers, we can draw comfort from this psalm and trust in God’s faithfulness to deliver us in our times of need.
