Psalms 26:6

I will wash mine hands in innocency: so will I compass thine altar, O Lord:

Psalms 26:6 (KJV)

Psalm 26 is attributed to King David and is a psalm of trust in God. In the verses before this one, David separates himself from the wicked and declares his loyalty to the Lord. Here he speaks of washing his hands in innocence and going around the altar, showing his desire to worship God with a pure heart.

Washing hands in innocence was a familiar sign of purity. In the Old Testament, people washed their hands to show they were clean from guilt. David uses this picture to say that he wants to live without blame before God. He is not claiming to be perfect, but he is determined to keep a clear conscience and to have nothing to do with evil.

The word “compass” means to go around. David pictures himself walking around the altar of the Lord. The altar was the center of worship and sacrifice. To go around it was to take part in worship fully and joyfully. David’s words connect clean hands with drawing near to God. He understands that worship is acceptable only when the worshiper’s life is pure.

This washing of hands reminds us of the ritual in Deuteronomy 21:6-7, where elders washed their hands to declare their innocence in a matter of unsolved murder. It also reminds us of Pilate’s hand-washing in Matthew 27, but that was a false claim of innocence. David’s washing is sincere. He truly seeks to be blameless before God.

This verse teaches us to pursue righteousness. Like David, we should examine our lives and turn away from sin. Confession and repentance bring cleansing of the conscience. We can then approach God with confidence.

We also learn the importance of drawing near to God. Through prayer, worship, and reading His Word, we come close to Him. Our worship should be sincere and wholehearted.

While we no longer offer animal sacrifices, we can present ourselves as living sacrifices to God, as Romans 12:1 says. Our lives become an offering of devotion and service.

  • Pursue a blameless life before God.

  • Confess sins and seek His forgiveness.

  • Draw near to God with a sincere heart.

  • Offer your life as a living sacrifice.

David’s example calls us to examine our own hearts. Do we come to worship with clean hands and a pure heart? Integrity before God is the foundation for true worship. When we live uprightly, we can joyfully approach His altar and offer Him our praise.
