Psalms 30:7

Posted on 18 May at 15:17

“Lord, by thy favour thou hast made my mountain to stand strong: thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled.”

Psalm 30 is attributed to King David and is a song of thanksgiving and praise. In this verse, David reflects on a time of trouble and distress when God seemed distant and hidden from him. However, it is important to consider the broader context of this verse within the entire psalm to gain a deeper understanding.

Psalm 30 begins with David expressing gratitude to God for delivering him from a dire situation. He praises God for lifting him up and preventing his enemies from rejoicing over his downfall. David acknowledges that he had once felt secure and self-reliant, saying in verse 6, “And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved.”

However, in verse 7, David acknowledges a shift in his circumstances. He recognizes that it was God’s favour and grace that made him strong and secure, comparing it to a mountain that stands unshaken. Yet, in his distress, David felt as though God had hidden His face, causing him to be troubled. This hiding of God’s face suggests a feeling of separation and abandonment, where God’s presence and guidance seemed absent.

This verse conveys a common human experience: the feeling of God’s absence during times of trouble or difficulty. Even faithful individuals, like King David, may go through seasons where God’s presence feels distant or hidden. This sense of abandonment can bring about distress and confusion, as we naturally long for God’s guidance and support.

David’s honest expression of trouble and unease in this psalm can serve as an encouragement for believers facing similar experiences. It reminds us that even in our moments of feeling distant from God, we can turn to Him, pour out our hearts, and seek His presence and help.

The remaining verses of Psalm 30 demonstrate a transformation in David’s perspective. In verse 8, he cries out to God for help, acknowledging that his only hope is in the Lord. Then, in verses 11-12, David shifts his focus from his distress to rejoicing in God’s deliverance. He declares, “Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness; to the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks unto thee forever.”

This progression within the psalm offers a valuable lesson for believers. Though we may experience seasons when God’s presence feels distant, we can find solace in knowing that our circumstances are not permanent. By reaching out to God in prayer and seeking His face, we open ourselves up to His transforming power and the restoration of joy.

In summary, Psalm 30:7 reflects King David’s experience of feeling troubled when he sensed God’s face was hidden. However, the psalm as a whole reminds us that even in times of distress, we can turn to God, seek His presence, and find comfort and restoration in Him. It encourages us to trust in God’s faithfulness and to praise Him for the deliverance He brings.
