Psalms 31:16

Posted on 18 May at 15:17

“Make thy face to shine upon thy servant: save me for thy mercies’ sake.”

Context:Psalms 31 is attributed to King David and is classified as a psalm of lament. In this psalm, David expresses his trust in God amidst challenging circumstances and seeks deliverance from his enemies. In verse 16, David calls upon God to shine His face upon him and save him.

The significance of “Make thy face to shine upon thy servant”:The phrase “Make thy face to shine upon thy servant” is an expression of seeking God’s favor and blessing. In biblical times, the face was considered a powerful symbol of a person’s presence, favor, and acceptance. When God’s face shines upon someone, it represents His divine favor, grace, and attention directed towards that individual. David longs for God’s favorable attention and blessings in his life.

Understanding “save me for thy mercies’ sake”:David’s plea for salvation is not based on his own merits or righteousness, but rather on God’s mercy. He acknowledges that it is God’s compassionate nature and loving-kindness that can deliver him from his troubles. David recognizes that he is dependent on God’s mercy and pleads for salvation solely on that basis.

Application to our lives:

  • Seeking God’s favor:Like David, we can seek God’s favor in our lives. As believers, we can ask God to shine His face upon us, seeking His divine presence, guidance, and blessings in our daily lives. We can approach Him with confidence, knowing that He is attentive to our needs and desires.
  • Trusting in God’s mercy:We should also recognize that our salvation and deliverance are not based on our own efforts but on God’s mercy. Just as David relied on God’s mercy, we too can trust in God’s unfailing love and compassion. Our hope and assurance lie in God’s character and His willingness to extend His mercy towards us.
  • Praying for deliverance:When we face challenges, opposition, or difficulties, we can follow David’s example and bring our needs before God. We can ask Him to save us from our troubles, knowing that His mercy and grace are sufficient for us. Through prayer, we can express our reliance on God’s power to rescue us from any situation.
  • Gratitude for God’s mercy:Recognizing God’s mercies should also lead us to gratitude. When we experience God’s deliverance, we should express our thankfulness and praise for His loving-kindness and faithfulness. Our lives should reflect a deep appreciation for God’s mercy, inspiring us to live in obedience and faithfulness to Him.

Remember, studying the Bible involves exploring the surrounding verses, considering the historical and cultural context, and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit to understand and apply the Word of God accurately.
