Psalms 37:9

Listen to this article

“For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.”

Psalm 37:9 (KJV) says: “For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.”

Context: Psalm 37 is a wisdom psalm attributed to King David. It provides guidance and encouragement to trust in God’s faithfulness, even in the face of wickedness and the prosperity of evildoers. The psalm emphasizes the importance of patience, trust, and righteous living.

Meaning of the verse: – “Evildoers shall be cut off”: This verse highlights the temporary nature of wickedness. The actions of those who engage in evil deeds will ultimately be brought to an end. God, in His righteousness, will deal with evildoers and their schemes.

– “Those that wait upon the LORD”: This refers to those who place their trust in God, patiently waiting for His guidance, deliverance, and justice. It implies a sense of faith, hope, and reliance on God’s timing and providence.

– “They shall inherit the earth”: Those who wait upon the Lord will receive a blessing from Him. In this context, “inheriting the earth” signifies that the righteous will enjoy God’s favor and blessings, including the land and its abundance.

Key lessons and applications: – Trust in God’s justice: The psalm encourages believers not to be envious or discouraged by the apparent success of evildoers. Instead, we should trust that God will deal with them according to His righteousness and timing.

– Patience and waiting upon the Lord: We are called to patiently wait for God’s plans to unfold, even when faced with adversity or injustice. God’s timing is perfect, and He will act on behalf of those who faithfully trust in Him.

– The ultimate reward for the righteous: In due time, those who trust in the Lord will be blessed and rewarded. While the wicked may experience temporary prosperity, the righteous will ultimately inherit the blessings and provisions of God.

Connecting to other biblical themes: – Jesus’ teaching on the meek: In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus echoed the sentiment of Psalm 37:9 in Matthew 5:5, saying, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” This reinforces the idea that the righteous, who exhibit humility and trust in God, will receive His blessings.

– God’s justice and judgment: Throughout the Bible, we find the assurance that God will eventually judge evildoers and bring about justice. Psalm 37:9 aligns with this broader theme of God’s righteousness and the certainty of His judgment.
