Psalms 37:11
“But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.”
Psalm 37:11 (KJV) says: “But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.”
Context: Psalm 37 is attributed to King David and is classified as a wisdom psalm. It addresses the theme of God’s justice and the righteous person’s trust in God’s provision. The psalm contrasts the wicked, who seem to prosper temporarily, with the righteous, who find their security and fulfillment in God.
The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth: The verse begins with the statement, “But the meek shall inherit the earth.” The term “meek” refers to those who are gentle, humble, and submissive in their disposition. In the biblical context, meekness does not imply weakness, but rather strength under control. It is an attitude that recognizes our dependence on God and acknowledges His sovereignty.
This phrase reflects Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5:5, where He says, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” Jesus’ words echo the psalmist’s sentiment that those who are meek and have a humble reliance on God will ultimately inherit the blessings and promises of God.
Delighting in the Abundance of Peace: The second part of the verse states, “and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.” The meek, those who submit to God’s will and trust in Him, will experience an abundance of peace. This peace is not merely the absence of conflict or turmoil but a deep inner tranquility and contentment that comes from knowing and walking with God.
The psalmist emphasizes that the meek find their joy and delight in this abundant peace that surpasses worldly understanding. It is a peace that comes from a close relationship with God, knowing that He is in control and faithfully guiding their steps.
Application:
- Humility and reliance on God: The meek acknowledge their dependence on God and trust in His guidance and provision. They recognize that true fulfillment comes from aligning their lives with God’s will.
- The promise of inheritance: The verse assures us that the meek will inherit the earth. This inheritance goes beyond material possessions and points to the eternal blessings and promises of God.
- Finding joy in God’s peace: The meek delight in the abundance of peace that comes from knowing God. Their contentment is not based on external circumstances but on their relationship with Him.
- Encouragement for the righteous: In a world where the wicked may seem to prosper, this verse brings encouragement to the righteous. It assures them that ultimately, God’s justice will prevail, and they will receive their inheritance.
Overall, Psalm 37:11 encourages us to cultivate meekness, trust in God’s provision, and find our joy in His abundant peace. It reminds us that true fulfillment and lasting inheritance come from a humble and faithful walk with God.
