Psalms 39:5

Posted on 18 May at 15:17
Listen to this article

“Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.”

Psalm 39:5 (KJV):

“Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.”

Context:Before diving into the verse itself, it’s important to understand the context of Psalm 39. This psalm is attributed to David and reflects on the brevity of life, the certainty of death, and the need for dependence on God. David contemplates the fleeting nature of human existence and seeks God’s guidance in understanding life’s purpose.

Reflection on the brevity of life:The verse begins with David acknowledging that God has made his days as a handbreadth. A handbreadth is a unit of measurement representing the width of a hand, emphasising how short and limited our lives are in the grand scheme of things. This imagery highlights the temporary nature of human existence and serves as a reminder of our mortality.

Recognition of insignificance:David goes on to say that his age is as nothing before God. This statement expresses humility and recognises the vast difference between the eternal nature of God and the transient nature of human life. Despite our accomplishments or achievements, we are insignificant in comparison to the greatness of God. This realisation can lead us to seek a deeper understanding of our purpose and a greater reliance on God’s guidance.

Vanity of human existence:The verse concludes with the declaration that every man, even in his best state, is altogether vanity. This phrase emphasises the inherent emptiness and futility of human pursuits when detached from a relationship with God. No matter how successful, powerful, or wealthy a person may become, without a proper perspective on life’s brevity and a recognition of God’s sovereignty, all human endeavours ultimately amount to vanity.

Selah:The word “Selah” appears at the end of the verse. While its precise meaning is uncertain, it is generally believed to be a musical notation indicating a pause or reflection. In the context of this psalm, it serves as a moment to pause and contemplate the message conveyed.

Key Takeaways:

  • Psalm 39:5 encourages us to reflect on the brevity of life and the insignificance of our achievements in comparison to God’s eternity.
  • It invites us to seek a deeper understanding of our purpose and to align our lives with God’s guidance.
  • The verse reminds us that a life disconnected from God’s truth and purpose is ultimately empty and futile.
  • Selah prompts us to pause and meditate on the profound truths expressed in this verse and consider their implications for our own lives.

By studying and reflecting on this verse, we can gain a deeper appreciation for the brevity of life, the importance of seeking God’s guidance, and the need to find true significance and fulfilment in our relationship with Him.
