“Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.”

Verse: “Blessed is that man that maketh the LORD his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.” (Psalm 40:4, KJV)

Context:Psalm 40 is attributed to King David and is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving to God for His faithfulness and deliverance. In this verse, David expresses the blessedness of the person who places their trust in the Lord and warns against pride and falsehood.

Trust in the Lord:The verse begins by declaring the blessedness of the person who makes the Lord their trust. Trusting in the Lord implies a complete reliance on Him, acknowledging His sovereignty, power, and faithfulness. It involves surrendering our will and placing our confidence in God’s wisdom and guidance in every aspect of life.

Rejecting Pride:The verse further emphasizes the importance of not respecting or being swayed by the proud. Pride is an attitude that exalts oneself above others and even above God. It can hinder our relationship with God and prevent us from acknowledging our need for His help and grace. The psalm encourages us to maintain humility and not be influenced by the arrogance of others.

Avoiding Lies:The verse concludes by warning against turning aside to lies. Lies refer to deceitful words or falsehood. David urges us to steer clear of falsehood and deceitful ways. As followers of God, we are called to embrace truth and integrity in all aspects of our lives. This includes being honest in our speech, actions, and interactions with others.

Application:

  • Place your trust in God:Reflect on areas of your life where you may be relying more on your own strength or the world’s wisdom rather than trusting in the Lord. Surrender those areas to God and seek His guidance and provision.
  • Cultivate humility:Examine your heart for any signs of pride that may hinder your relationship with God and others. Ask God to help you cultivate a humble and teachable spirit.
  • Embrace truthfulness:Evaluate your words and actions to ensure they align with truth and integrity. Avoid participating in or spreading falsehoods, gossip, or deceitful practices.

Remember, this verse encourages us to trust in God, reject pride, and live in truthfulness. By doing so, we can experience the blessedness that comes from a close relationship with the Lord.
