Psalms 40:4

Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust, and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.

Psalms 40:4 (KJV)

Psalm 40 is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving written by King David. He celebrates God’s faithfulness and deliverance. In this verse, David declares the blessedness of the person who trusts in the Lord and refuses to follow the proud or those who turn to lies.

The word “blessed” means a state of divine favor, joy, and well-being. To “make the Lord his trust” is to place complete reliance on God’s character, promises, and guidance. It means surrendering our own plans and acknowledging His sovereignty in every part of life. The verse contrasts this with two wrong paths: respecting the proud and turning aside to lies.

The proud are those who are self-sufficient and arrogant, trusting in their own strength or status. To “respect” them means to look to them for help or to be influenced by their example. The verse warns against this because pride exalts itself above God and blinds a person to their need for grace. The blessed person instead keeps humility and depends on God alone.

“Lies” include deceitful words, false teachings, and any false source of security, such as idols or material wealth. Turning aside to lies means abandoning truth and integrity. David urges us to stay faithful to God’s truth and to avoid falsehood in speech and action. This includes rejecting the world’s empty promises that lead away from God.

This verse echoes the broader biblical teaching that trust in God brings safety and peace, while reliance on human pride or falsehood leads to disappointment. The contrast is between a life centered on God and one centered on self or created things. The same call to humble dependence appears throughout the Psalms, reminding readers that true security is found only in the Lord.

  • Place your trust in God: Examine areas where you rely on your own strength, status, or the world’s wisdom instead of the Lord. Surrender those areas to Him and seek His guidance.

  • Cultivate humility: Check your heart for pride that hinders your relationship with God and others. Ask God to give you a humble and teachable spirit.

  • Embrace truthfulness: Evaluate your words and actions to ensure they align with truth and integrity. Avoid gossip, deceit, and any falsehood that turns you from God.

This verse invites us to examine where we place our ultimate confidence. When we trust in the Lord and reject pride and lies, we experience the blessedness of a close relationship with Him. That trust brings peace and security that human pride or falsehood can never provide.
